| Glendale boy wins Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge Posted: 07 Mar 2011 09:45 AM PST by Ian Sullivan - Mar. 7, 2011 10:27 AM A 10-year-old Glendale boy took the cake in a cook-off designed to improve kids' healthy habits. Jacob Edwards didn't make cake. His first-place recipe was dubbed Fruity Rice. The creation included brown rice with pineapples and cashews. He entered the dish in the Walk On! Kids Cooking Challenge hosted by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona. The boy and four other young chefs were at Tempe Marketplace on Feb. 12 to cook up their concoction for four judges. Mayor Hugh Hallman, chef Payton Curry, food critic Barbara Yost and chef and nutritionist Stephanie Green judged the food based on taste, nutritional value, creativity and presentation. Jacob walked away with the top prize, which included front-row seats to a Phoenix Suns game and a chance to meet the team. He said he's a sports fan, but he also likes to cook. Jacob said his winning entry was inspired by a Thai restaurant, but he experimented with different ingredients to make it his own. The Cub Scout started helping his mom, Karyn Edwards, in the kitchen when he was five. He frequently cooks and creates dishes for family meals, including Thanksgiving feasts. When he's not baking with his mom or making his favorite spaghetti dish, Jacob likes to watch the Food Channel with his dad, Scott Edwards. The young chef prefers to cook from scratch. He watches cooking shows to increase his culinary knowledge. Jacob's aunt tipped him off to the contest, which was part of Blue Cross Blue Shield's larger health and fitness program for fifth-graders to combat childhood obesity. The program has existed six years, although this was the first year for the cooking contest. Children ages 9-12 were invited to submit healthy recipes.
